“I first saw Joseph as a solo performer in our American Living Room festival – I was impressed then by his work on WHIZZY, and am so glad that he’s still out there offering his well-crafted, funny and intimate stories. He is both a wonderful member of the NY theater community, and a passionate teacher of solo performance.”
-Kristin Marting, Artistic Director
HERE

“MY ITALY STORY proved that Joseph Gallo has an incredible talent when it comes to creating solo shows. He knows how to tell a pretty damn good story. As a teacher, he has the ability to get emotion and depth out of any solo performer, making it easy for them to generate both story material and memorable characters that will connect with an audience. He’ll make your solo show stand out in what has become a very crowded field.”
-Erich Jungwirth, Producer
Broadway’s A Behanding in Spokane

Joseph Gallo is a triple-threat: while his greatest talent can be found in the acclaimed plays he has written, Mr. Gallo is also a terrific teacher and an accomplished producer. As a resident artist at Shetler Studios & Theatres, he has made a decisive contribution to our efforts as a producing company, and his remarkable artistry has elevated our ambitions. I am hard-pressed to think of someone more passionate and excited about the theatre.
- Robin A. Paterson,
Managing Artistic Director
Shetler Studios & Theatres

Writing and Performing The Solo Show

A one-day workshop designed for anyone with a story to tell (and all of us have a story to tell!). The class is open to all levels of experience, whether you have a great idea for a solo show, have already begun working on one, or simply have material that needs polishing. By first utilizing a series of writing and performing exercises, students will then move towards honing their own material. ADDED BONUS: One student from the workshop will also be selected to perform their piece in Artistic New Directions Solo Works In Progress this November 3 – 6, 2014.

Joseph Gallo - is a regular at The Moth where he is a StorySLAM champion. His solo play My Italy Story , which had its debut Off-Broadway at the 47th Street Theatre, and was nominated for the Gay Talese Literary Prize, was recently revived at Mile Square Theatre, starring two-time Emmy award winner Tom Pelphrey. Other solo shows include Whizzy and The Jealousy Piece, both of which premiered in the American Living Room festival at HERE. As a dramaturg and coach he worked on Cary Hoffman’s My Sinatra, which ran Off-Broadway at the Midtown Theatre, and Rachel Factor’s international solo hit J.A.P., among others. He holds an MFA in playwriting from Ohio University.
